Commonly known as Monk's Hood, due to the helmeted, hooded shape of the flowers, Aconitum are great flowers for the backs of borders, or on the edge of a shady woodland.  Growing in almost any soil conditions except very dry, they thrive in moist or damp locations, preferably in partial shade, although they will tolerate both fuller shade and full sun.  Aconitum x camarum is a bicolour where the pure white flowers are edged with violet blue, giving them quite a presence.  Although very attractive it should be noted that all parts of aconites are very poisonous, especially the tubers and seeds, so do not allow to be ingested, and wash hands after handling.  Holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit and, when happy, will get 90 to 120cm high and 60 to 90cm wide.
