One of our favourite anemone's, 'Whirlwind' is beautiful in a rather rumpled and winsome way.  Standing in tall, wiry clumps to around 75cm, it's pretty, ruffled, semi double, white flowers in late summer and early autumn each have a golden central ring of stamens, surrounded by multiple white petals, which act as a foil to the other often louder hues of rudbeckia, helenium  and aster that flower at a similar time.  Preferring a deep and fertile moist, but well drained, soil in sun or partial shade, anemones dislike disturbance, but can spread rapidly when happy.  Large clumps can be split and replanted in autumn or early spring, but remember they spread by suckering underground, so be sure to dig out all the roots on any runners.
