Forsythia 'Weekend'

One of the best Forsythias available 'Weekend' will be smothered in bright yellow, four petalled flowers in March and April on a bare stemmed shrub, as the deep green leaves only appear as the shrub finishes flowering.  Excellent in a shrub border, as a specimen, or as a hedge; in smaller spaces it can also be used as a wall shrub, so very versatile.  Unfussy about soil conditions, except very wet soils, and as hardy as they come, so positioning not critical, this plant if left unchecked will grow to around 2.5 x 2.5 metres.  It can be kept to size through regular pruning, which should be done immediately after flowering.  In any event take out on or two of the oldest stems to the ground each year, and thin out congested, untidy, diseased or ill placed branches, cutting back to a healthy bud.
