Morello Cherry is the best sour cherry for cooking, and as a late flowerer is well suited to harsher northern climes. The fruit are ready for picking when dark red, but, if left a few weeks more until they turn black can be eaten straight from the tree, although they can be rather acidic. Self fertile this tree does not need a pollination partner, but can be used to pollinate several other varieties of sweet cherry. Morello's will normally make a maximum of 4 metres height. Very important if pruning is required to do this only in summer. Needs a rich and well drained soil, so the addition of manure or compost at planting time is recommended. Highly attractive in flower, and good for pollinators.
