A reliable and very showy flowering quince,(Japanese quince, japonica), 'Knap Hill Scarlet' is a spreading thorny shrub with mid-green glossy leaves, and clusters of cup-shaped, large, bright red flowers in early spring, when there is little other colour to shout about. These are followed by green fruits ripening to yellow, which although edible are a little bitter for consumptiion off the bush, but are very useful in jellies and preserves. Makes a great and impenetrable boyundary screen, as well as just a specimen in a border. Max Height 1.5m. Max Spread 2m. Flowers April to May. Fruits August. Full sun/partial shade. Easy to grow, and tolerant of most soil types and conditions. Hardy. Water thoroughly before planting. Holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit.
