Astrantia major 'Claret'

Astrantia are a clump-forming perennial with lobed and palmate green leaves. 'Claret' is possibly the deepest red coloured astrantia of them all, though not the most vigorous.  It features very dark red 'pincushion' flowers, on almost black stems, surrounded by complimentary bracts giving a very pleasing mound of stars effect. The leaves, which are a glossy dark green are also tinged red on the edges, making the plant very attractive even when not in flower. Popular in British cottage gardens for many years, Astrantia are hardy down to -20, and once established 'Claret' can grow to a height of 60cm, with a spread of 50cm. Flowering in June and July 'Claret' is very wildlife friendly, tolerates a wide range of soils and will grow in full or semi shaded sunlight.  Astrantias can self seed, but rarely come true to type, so if you don't want them too, deadhead after flowering.
