Acer palmatum 'Dissectum' is a lovely weeping cultivar of Japanese Maple, reaching a height and spread of c 2m x 3m in 20 years, with deeply cut leaves which emerge a bright yellow green in spring, mature to a mid green, then changing once more to shades of red orange and yellow before dropping in autumn. It has very small purple red flowers, followed by winged fruit., but is mainly grown for the exquisite form and the light filtering finely cut leaves. It loves a moist but well drained soil, in dappled or full shade in quite a wide range of soil types, but prefers soils in the acid to neutral range. Excellent grown as a specimen in a large pot, or in a border position, but best in a sheltered spot and protect from cold winds in spring as the leaves are first emerging. Do not allow the roots to dry out, as both of these things will lead to dessication of the leaves and the loss of the plant.
