Getting height into a perennial border is essential to create the right balance, and if it's height you're after then Veronicastrum virginicum 'Fascination' is certainly one to consider. Whorls of deep green spear like leaves with a reddish tint give rise in summer to long dark red stems topped with spires of tiny pinky mauve flowers which wave and weave in the breeze and attract myriad pollinators. No wonder it is called 'Fascination', as the effect is quite mesmerising. A vigorous grower the plant can reach 1.4 metres or so in height and up to a metre spread when mature. Mature clumps can be split in early spring. The flowerheads can be used for cutting (the seedheads look amazing in winter if left on), and are also much prized by flower arrangers. Also known as Culver's Root, this plant is a beautiful addition to the herbaceous border. Quite tolerant of most soil conditions, fully hardy and low maintenance, so much to love indeed!
