Hylotelephium (Sedum) 'Autumn Joy' aka 'Herbstfreude'
Sold OutSedums are wonderful plants for wildlife, for structure, and for draught resistance. Re classified officially as Hylotelephium spectabile, the upright clump forming group of which ''Autumn Joy' is a member, form clumps of fleshy basal foliage, from which sturdy stems emerge bearing broccoli like heads of deep pink buds. These gradually open to tiny star flowers of raspberry red from summer onwards, turning a deep rusty red in autumn, which combines wonderfully with the blue green foliage. Even the spent flowerheads though are impressive and will stand well into te winter, looking great with a dusting of frost! Holding an RHS Award of Garden Merit, Sedum 'Autumn Joy' will grow in even poor soils, as long as they are moderately moist but well drained, and can grow 30 to 60cm high and wide. Resistant to rabbits and most diseases, great for gravel gardens, rock gardens, borders and pots, these are brilliant plants, and Autumn Joy is one of the best.
