A really gorgeous variety of salvia, which flowers for months in the summer between June and September. The long slender reddish purple flowers make a marvellous contrast with the burgundy calyx. A tall and willowy plant with glossy elliptical deep green leaves this one gets to 70cm but can be quite easily trimmed to keep it more compact. As with many of the salvia family it is only half hardy, so in cooler areas is best grown in a pot which can be overwintered under glass, although may last several years outdoors in a well drained and sheltered spot if given a deep mulch each autumn. A bit of a show stopper, it would still give very good value if only grown as an annual!
