Helleborus foetidus has more finely divided and elegant foliage than the majority of hellebores. This compact evergreen perennial whose foliage resembles a clump of ferns has clusters of lime green flowers in late winter and spring which nod gracefully on thick stems held just above the top of the foliage. The flowers can last for several months, which make this plant invaluable as a foil to other spring dappled shade lovers such as primroses and many varieties of spring bulb. The plant can grow 75 to 80cm tall and 40 to 50cm wide, holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit, is attractive to pollinators and will grow almost anywhere in well drained, rich but moist soil.
