A. niponicum var. pictum is a striking deciduous fern with a shortly-creeping rhizome and lance-shaped, bipinnate fronds to 30cm, grey, with paler midribs to the pinnae, and a red-purple zone along the centre. A striking fern, which will grow in any evenly moist soil, enriched with humus which is acid to neutral in ph. Prefers shade or dappled shade, and definitely does not want to dry out. Also known as the Painted Lady Fern, Athyrium niponicum 'Metallicum' can be expected to reach 45cm in height and spread up to 50cm across.
