This is a very useful hardy fern for a shady part of the garden, as it will thrive in deep or partial shade. It's evergreen and forms a rosette of rich green frilly strap shaped fronds, which slightly arch over. In spring when the new fronds first start to emerge they seem like coiled springs, and the rich cool green colouring makes them a perfect foil for early spring flowering pulbs and perennials, such as brunnera, pulmonaria and snowdrops. Can get to 0.5m x 0.5m, but on average usually about 0.2m.
