Damson Merryweather is one of the most widely grown of all damsons, and also one of the toughest, thriving in reasonably hostile conditions, hardy throughout most of the UK. It has larger than average black fruit, which can be eaten straight from the tree, but are more usually used in the kitchen. A heavy cropper, fruits will normally be available to pick in mid season. Preferring a sheltered site in well drained but moist soil, Merrweather is self fertile and in flowering group 3. Grown on St Julian A rootstock, which means it will be a semi vigorous plant and can be expected to reach an ultimate height and spread of 3 to 4 metres.
